Buying a used car can be an ordeal. Of course, if you are a mechanic you can probably spot a lemon when you see one. But for the rest of us, if can be a topsy-turvy experience and to avoid common mistakes it’s best to be an informed shopper.

In my lifetime, I’ve purchased a few used cars. Some from auto dealers and some from private sellers. One thing that has always helped me is having a checklist in hand when I’m inspecting a used car.

It’s particularly useful if you’re shopping multiple cars. Just like when shopping for a home to buy, you can lose track of the likes/dislikes after you’ve visited several.
